ESS Dept printers are to be used only for ESS dept related work.

ESS Dept undergraduate majors and ESS graduate students may print Non-ESS UW Classwork on ESS B&W laser printers, as we do wish to support our declared undergrad majors and grad students and therefore consider minimal B&W printing for this purpose to be appropriate. Please do not use any of the color printers for Non-ESS UW-related work.

Linux
We will be using the system-config-printer package to manage the network printers.

  1. In a terminal enter
    sudo yum -y install system-config-printer
  2. In a terminal enter
    sudo system-config-printer
  3. Click the "New" button. If you are prompted to adjust the firewall you should select "Do It Later" as it is not necessary.
  4. Select the LPD/LPR Host or Printer option from the "Select Device" menu and click "Forward" .
  5. Select the appropriate Makes from the menu.
  6. Select the appropriate Model from the menu.
  7. Enter the information you would like displayed for the printer. The "Printer Name" shouldn't contain spaces, but the "Description" can be whatever you prefer.
  8. You should print a test page if prompted to verify the printer is correctly setup.
Mac OSX Quick and Easy (Recommended)

  1. Install the drivers by running the following in a terminal. When prompted for a password enter your Mac user account's password.
    curl -o /tmp/brother-drivers.tgz https://wiki.ess.washington.edu/dokuwiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=comphelp:printing:network_printing_files:brother-drivers.tgz
    sudo tar -xf /tmp/brother-drivers.tgz -C /Library/Printers/
  2. Install the desired printers

Mac OSX
Please note that this tutorial uses OSX 10.6. Language may vary slightly between versions but the steps should largely remain the same.

  1. Click the Apple icon and select System Preferences
  2. Click Print & Fax
  3. Ensure the lock icon is open. If it is closed (locked) click it to allow changes.
  4. Click the + icon to add a new printer.
  5. Click the IP tab if it is not already selected.
  6. Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD from the drop down list. If the LPD option is not present select Line Printer Remote Protocol - LPR.
  7. Enter the information from above for the printer you wish to add. Be careful when entering the Address and Queue as they must be exact and should not have leading or trailing spaces. You should also give the printer a unique name you will be able to recognize.
  8. Select the most appropriate driver from the Print Using: drop down menu. If you are unsure or have no preference Generic PCL Laser Printer are a good default.
  9. If you are prompted to select whether or not the printer is a Duplex Printing Unit check above. If the printer does support Duplex you should select it so that you may print double sided.
  10. Check that your printer is now appearing in your list of printers.

If you run into issues installing a printer you should double check that you entered the Address and Queue correctly and see if anyone else is having trouble printing to the printer as these are the most common printer issues.

Windows Quick and Easy (Recommended)
This is a new method that is much simpler and quicker than the standard methods listed below. It has been successfully tested on Windows 7 x64 and Windows 10 x64.

  2. Prepare the directory and download wget

Win XP

Many of our printers are of old enough vintage, such that thedriver is likely included with the Win-XP OS installed onyour computer. Try following the directions below and see if youcan find the printer in the available printers list. If youcannot find the appropriate driver or feel that you need an updateddriver, then you will need to go looking for the printer driver from our software download webpages or direct from themanufacturer website … ie hp.com. Search for your printer name(such as "4250dtn"), Note that there are generally two types of printerdrivers … PS drivers are normally PostScript drivers … and otherdrivers are likely to be a raster driver of one sort or another.Top quality (shading, color, etc) is usually obtained fromPostscript, but Postscript sometimes has glitches. Raster driversare more likely to be exactly what you see on the computer screen, butquality is often not as good. Typically for an HP driver, youwill download a zip file that will expand into a directory with theassorted appropriate driver files. When installing the printeryou will browse to that directory.

We now emphasize use of a standard TCP/IP printserver using the lpr/lpd protocols for talking to our printers. Use of the printserver is critical to gain some management control … ie stopping errant out-of-control print jobs. Do note that the print queues on the essprint server are "raw" print queues that do not re-process the image in any fashion. It is critical that you have the right printer driverinstalled on your client computer.

To install aprinter, log in as Administrator (or equivalent on your machine), go tothe <start> button, select the <control-panel> button, thecontrol panel opens, double click on the <printers> folder, thendouble click on <Add Printer> icon, click <next> to run theprinter wizard, make sure the local radiobutton is selected and clicknext, let the system time-out looking for non-existent local printers,at this point the "Select the Printer Port" window appears. Youwill likely have to "create a new port" by clicking on thatradiobutton, and then change the port type from "Local Port" to"Standard TCP/IP Port in the pull down list". Click Next. A new window opens, the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard"window, click next. Enter the DNS name of your printserver,"essprint.ess.washington.edu".ote that this name will echo in theportname line, but you should change the portname line to something different … I typically use the desired queue name, then click next.

The Printer wizard windowwill now appear with selected printer & port and will likely default to HP-Jet-Direct Protocol. You must click on the "Custom" Setting button to configure the port, then click on the "lpr" radiobutton, specify the desired essprint queue name, and then it is criticalthat you check (enable) the "LPR Byte Counting Enabled" option.Click OK to close the configure the port window.Click Next. At thispoint the Add printer Wizard window will change to a list ofmanaufacturers on the left and a list of models on the right.First, on the left choose the manufacturer, ie hp or lexmark, then onthe right, choose the model. Then click next. If you cannotfind your manufacturer & model, then you will have to download fromthe manufacturer website, and then "browse" to the directory with theappropriate drivers by clicking on "have disk", browsing to thelocation. and selecting the appropriate inf file. It will giveyou an option to then choose your printer (driver). After doingeither of the above two steps to choose your printer driver, you willbe given an option to "Name your Printer". Give it an informativename, and check the default option if appropriate. I usuallyprint a test page (unless it is a plotter), and then I click<Finish>.

You should now have a working printer.
