Setting Up IMAP Client

Replace netid with your actual UW NetID.

Before you begin you will need to enable IMAP. Log into gmail.com and do the following:

  1. Click the gear icon in the upper righthand corner
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
  4. Click Enable IMAP
  5. Click Save Changes
  • Email Address - netid@uw.edu
  • Incoming Server Username: netid@uw.edu
  • Incoming Server Password: Your password will not default to your UW NetID password. You must set the password separately using the link at https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/?google
  • Incoming Server Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Server Hostname: imap.gmail.com
  • Incoming Server Port: 993
  • Incoming Server Security: SSL/TLS
  • Incoming Server Authentication: Normal Password
  • Outgoing Server Username: netid@uw.edu
  • Outgoing Server Password: Your password will not default to your UW NetID password. You must set the password separately using the link at https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/?google
  • Outgoing Server Hostname: smtp.gmail.com
  • Outgoing Server Port: 587
  • Outgoing Server Security: STARTTLS
  • Outgoing Server Authentication: Normal Password

If this fails you may need to allow access to less secure apps depending on your email client. First log into gmail.com then visit https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and select Turn On (if you don't see this option try to visit the link again after having logged in).
