Parted Magic is a live OS that can be used to create and/or clone a partition or disk It also has many other useful functions: hardware testing, data recovery, & verifiable OS; if you are interested in any of these please contact CompHelp.

Partition / Disk Imaging

If you have never done this before we encourage you to let us walk you through the process the first time as it is somewhat involved.

  1. Boot into Parted Magic via CD or USB
  2. Doubleclick "Disk Cloning"
  3. Select device-image
  4. Select storage location type. It must have more free space than whatever you are trying to back up. For a external USB drive select "local dev"
  5. Select storage location, it will vary depending on what type of device you are using but make sure you select somewhere you will be able to easily find
  6. Select "Beginner"
  7. Select "save disk" unless you are really sure you don't need the entire disk
  8. Give your image a descriptive name, for example "nathan-pc-20170724"
  9. Start the backup process; once complete you will have a restorable image

Partition / Disk Cloning

We typically recommend you first make an image then clone from that; it takes a little bit longer but gives you a permanent backup copy should you need it. These directions assume you made an image are now restoring it to a new disk.

  7. Select "restore disk" or "restore partition" depending on what kind of image you created earlier
  8. Select the restore location; be very careful you select the correct destination as it will overwrite whatever is currently present
  9. Begin the restore by confirming twice that you wish to overwrite any potential existing data
